Not everyone manages to get a proper night’s sleep on the bus, but the right preparation can make a real difference to how well you rest. The most important thing is to plan ahead: choose a seat, wear suitable clothing and bring items that will support your neck and block out the light.

    Choose a suitable seat

The front of the coach usually feels smoother over bumpy roads, and a window seat provides extra support. A seat near the aisle makes it easier to get up at stops. If you’re prone to feeling queasy, don’t sit at the very back of the coach.

    Prepare a sleep kit

Take a compact neck pillow, a sleep mask, earplugs or headphones. A light blanket or a large scarf will come in handy if the air conditioning is set too high. You’ll find a useful checklist in our guide on what to take on a 10–20-hour bus journey.

    Dress in layers

Soft clothing without tight waistbands is more comfortable for long periods of sitting. It’s best to have a jumper that’s easy to take off and warm socks. Don’t put valuables in outerwear that you plan to take off.

Before going to sleep and after waking up

Don’t overeat just before departure and don’t overdo it on caffeine. Drink water in small sips. At rest stops, take a walk and gently stretch your legs. Before arrival, allow yourself 15–20 minutes to wake up and check your documents and belongings.
