A weekend in Europe by coach: how to work out the actual time in a city

Two calendar days off do not always mean two full days of sightseeing. For a short coach trip, it’s a good idea to first check the available times and then decide whether the destination suits you.

What to think about in advance

On a piece of paper, note down your expected arrival time, the journey to your accommodation, time for luggage, and the start of your return journey. Subtract these time slots from your weekend. Set aside some time after an overnight journey: a list of sights drawn up without allowing for rest quickly ceases to be realistic.

How to apply this to your trip

For a short visit, choose a compact area and one main attraction. If you only have the evening left after your journey, don’t book a package covering several distant museums. Sometimes it’s better to spend a leisurely day in one place than to tick off five locations just for the sake of it.

Check before taking the next step

Before booking, write all your overnight stays and coach journeys into your calendar. Mark the arrangements that can still be changed without losing money, and those that already tie you to a specific day. Check your entire door-to-door route: a short journey with inconvenient stops can sometimes take up more of your valuable time than a longer, direct route.

    Questions and answers

Does the day of arrival count as a full day of sightseeing?

Only based on the time actually available after alighting, storing your luggage and taking a necessary break.

What should the outcome of your planning be?

You need to know where you’ll be staying, where you’ll be setting off from the next day, and which parts of the itinerary can be shortened.

When should you check the bus timetable for the last time?

Check the journey after booking, again 24 hours before departure, and once more before heading to the bus stop. Save the journey number and the carrier’s confirmation offline.

How much time should you allow before boarding the bus?

Follow the operator’s advice and allow extra time for public transport, finding the platform and checking your documents. For international journeys, it’s better to arrive early than to plan a tight connection.
