Your ticket has been purchased, but the number entered in the booking no longer works. You may have lost the SIM card, changed phones, returned a work number to your employer or used a relative’s contact when buying. You may still have the document, but notifications about a changed time or new stop will go to the wrong place. Resolve the problem before departure day, rather than when the bus is already waiting for passengers.

Changing a contact number and changing a passenger are different actions. There is no need to ask for the ticket to be reissued to another person if you are still travelling yourself. Your task is to establish which contact is linked to the specific purchase, how to update it officially and how to check the service until the change is confirmed.
Establish exactly where the old number is used
Different services may store the phone number in a personal profile, a specific booking, a separate passenger form or a message to the carrier. Updating one field does not always change all other records. Do not stop at entering a new number in your account settings: check what has happened to the journey you have already bought.
Open the purchase confirmation and locate the booking number, seller and carrier. Check which communication channels are listed: SMS, calls, email or app messages. Do not assume that every carrier duplicates all information across every channel. Clarify the procedure for your particular service and save the answer.
If someone else bought the ticket, discuss the situation with them. Sometimes the buyer’s contact deliberately differs from the passenger’s. This can be convenient for a family booking, but creates dependence on the buyer’s availability. Establish who will promptly receive updates and pass them to the person actually standing at the platform.
How to request a contact update
Use the official channel shown on the seller’s website or in a verified purchase confirmation. Give the booking number, passenger’s name, date and direction. Explain that the previous phone is unavailable and ask how to change the contact used for notifications. Do not send a complete set of passport pages without a specific need.
Provide the new phone number in international format, checking the country code and every digit. If it belongs to a companion, say so and obtain their consent to use it for the journey. Do not enter someone else’s number without agreement: an important call may reach a person who does not know which bus is involved.
Ask for confirmation not only that your message was received, but also of the result: whether the number was updated in the particular booking, whether it was passed to the carrier and which channel is primary. “We have seen your email” does not mean the change is complete. Keep the response with your ticket, particularly if departure is soon.
What not to change yourself
Do not edit the phone number in the PDF expecting it to update automatically with the seller. An issued file and a booking record are not the same thing. If your account allows contact changes, check whether they apply to the existing purchase. If the interface does not explain the result, contact support instead of repeatedly experimenting.
Do not create a new account merely to “move” the ticket to a new number unless the service describes that procedure. A separate registration may not provide access to the old booking. Buying again likewise does not correct the contact in the previous booking. First establish how the service verifies ownership of a purchase and processes changes.
Updating a phone contact is not a substitute for checking the surname, identification or passenger details. If you also find a name error, describe it separately. Staff need to understand what you are asking them to do: update a communication channel, check access to a purchase or change details under the ticket conditions. Do not combine these requests into one vague phrase.
If the number change has not yet been confirmed
Where possible, retain access to the old number until the journey is complete, but only if it legally belongs to you and remains securely under your control. If the SIM card is lost or you suspect unauthorised access, arrange recovery and security with your mobile operator. Do not ask the new holder of your old number to forward login codes or private messages.
Meanwhile, check known official channels: email, your account, the app or booking page, depending on the service. Checks should relate to your journey, not random social media posts. Before leaving for the boarding point, confirm the current address and time using the procedure agreed with the seller or carrier.
If departure is near, briefly tell the crew or dispatcher about the contact problem through an available official channel. Do not expect a platform staff member necessarily to be able to update every record. They may suggest next steps, but establish the final result with the party managing the relevant booking.
Checking messages to the new number safely
After making a request, you may be expecting a response, which can make an unrelated message seem more convincing. Do not treat every call “about your ticket” as confirmation. Compare the date, route and booking number, and if payment or documents are requested, verify the request through a contact you have opened independently.
You do not need to disclose a one-time login code, email password, banking details or CVV to another person in ordinary correspondence to change a contact phone number. If the service verifies you through its own interface, complete the process only on its known official page. Do not copy a code into a chat at the request of someone who called you first.
Save any new service notification, but check its content. The contact may have been updated correctly while a forwarded file concerns another journey or an old version. Compare the surname, date, direction and current document. Receiving an SMS on the correct phone does not mean that every subsequent instruction can be followed without reading it.
A short pre-journey checklist
Also check whether the new number can actually be used for communication while travelling. A valid SIM card, a muted phone and no network coverage are different situations. If calls will be unavailable abroad, establish an agreed backup channel in advance rather than simply giving a number you cannot answer.
- The current ticket opens without access to the old SIM card.
- The new contact is entered correctly and the result of the change is confirmed.
- You know which channel will carry updates for the specific service.
- The seller’s and carrier’s official contacts and a backup communication method are saved.
A backup communication method should not make your information public. A private arrangement with someone close to you who knows the route and can help if your device stops working is sufficient. Do not publicly post the full ticket asking people to call the number’s new holder: that creates another risk rather than fixing the booking’s contact link.
For future purchases, check the contact section before paying as carefully as the date and surname. Browser autofill can insert an old phone number even after you change SIM cards. Correcting a profile once does not guarantee that the number will not reappear from another saved source.
Questions and answers
Is changing the number in my profile enough?
Not always. Check whether the contact in the existing booking was updated and whether the carrier received it. Ask official support to confirm the result.
Do I need a new ticket because I lost my SIM card?
Losing access to the number alone is not a reason to automatically buy again. Keep your document and establish the procedure for updating the contact and accessing the booking.
Can I use a relative’s phone number?
If the service’s procedures allow it, agree its use with your relative and explain that the contact belongs to someone else. Arrange for updates to be passed to the passenger immediately.
Support received my email—has the number changed?
Not necessarily. Acknowledging a request and confirming a completed change are different things. Ask them to state explicitly which contact is now used for the particular purchase.
