Venice in two days: an itinerary following a coach journey
Article contents

    Your first visit to Venice should be planned not around a long list of sights, but around two convenient walking areas. After getting off the bus, first drop off your luggage, take a short break, and only then head into the city centre. You can cover the key sights in two days if you plan a logical route on the map.

    Don’t tie yourself to a specific location every half hour: a delayed bus or a queue can easily throw your plans off course. When visiting Italy, it’s worth bearing in mind the cobbled streets, lunch breaks and the need to book popular attractions in advance, whilst leaving one optional stop that you can skip if necessary.

    Day one: exploring the city centre

    Once you’ve dropped off your luggage, head to St Mark’s Square, and from there to the Rialto Bridge. This combination gives you a first impression of Venice without the hassle of complex logistics. It’s best to book detailed tours only once your arrival time has been confirmed.

    Make a note of your return point and the nearest stop where city buses, the metro or regional trains are available. If you arrive early, take a longer break before lunch; if you arrive late, round off the day with a short loop near your accommodation.

    Day two: the main attraction and a relaxed finish

    Start the second day earlier in the Cannaregio district, whilst visitor numbers are still low. After a general tour, head towards the Zattere promenade, choosing a route through the residential neighbourhoods or along the waterfront, provided it doesn’t involve a major detour.

    Finish your final walk closer to your accommodation or take a direct route to the station. Before your next bus, allow time to collect your luggage, find the platform and make any necessary changes to your journey.

    How to draw up a realistic budget

    Don’t judge your trip solely by the cost of museums: transfers, luggage and meals often account for the bulk of your expenses. Compare single tickets with day passes and don’t overpay for city card features you won’t use.

    What to prepare before arrival

    • a screenshot of your ticket, the address of your accommodation and the entrance to it;
    • markings for the Rialto and the Zattera promenade on a downloaded map;
    • a fully charged power bank, water and a compact raincoat;
    • a backup route to the bus without complicated changes.

    Questions and Answers

    How should I organise my 48 hours in Venice?

    Spend your arrival day exploring the city centre and open spaces, and the morning of the following day visiting attractions that require tickets. Keep the last few hours free before your journey home.

    What should I do with my suitcase before check-in?

    Ask your hotel or apartment if they offer early check-in. Alternatively, use an official luggage storage facility with clear rates, a receipt and convenient opening hours.

    When is a transport pass worthwhile in Venice?

    A travel pass is worth it if you’re making several long journeys in a single day. If your route takes you through the compact city centre, compare the cost of the pass with two or three single tickets.

    Which stops should you check in advance?

    Check the time slot for the Cannaregio district, the rules on carrying a rucksack, and how to collect your ticket. Also, confirm the exact address of your next bus stop.
