A bicycle changes the logistics of the entire journey: from entering the station to exiting at your destination. Even if you’re cycling easily through the city, carrying your bike and bags up and down the stairs can take considerably longer.
Check the transport requirements
Before you buy, check whether you need to dismantle it, provide a cover, a separate document or a special space. The conditions for a standard bike and an e-bike may differ, particularly because of the battery. Don’t assume the rules apply from one train to another. When making a connection, check with both transport operators, not just the first leg of the journey.
Prepare your bike for boarding
Remove or secure anything that might snag on or soil other passengers’ luggage, in accordance with the agreed format. Pack away tools and small parts. Check that access routes at stations are clear and allow time for carrying your bike. In the carriage, place your bicycle only where permitted, without blocking the doors.

Questions and answers
Do I need a cover?
It depends on the specific train and the method of transport.
Are electric bikes transported in the same way?
Do not assume this: check the requirements for the battery and the bike itself separately.
Do I need to check at every change of train?
Yes, conditions may vary between carriers.
How much time should you allow at the station?
Estimate the actual journey time, taking into account stairs and luggage, rather than your usual journey time without the bike.
