Second-class carriages are usually chosen for the smaller number of fellow passengers and a more private journey at night. However, you shouldn’t automatically equate a higher class with a specific set of services: check exactly what’s included in the carriage you’ve chosen.

Take a look at the layout

In the standard SV layout, a compartment has two berths, but you should refer to the actual seating plan. Check the number of berths, their layout and the price per passenger. A ticket for one berth should not be taken to mean payment for the entire compartment. If you need a private space for two, make sure both berths are in the same compartment.

    Compare the overall value

For a short overnight journey, the surcharge may be less significant than for a long journey followed by a working day upon arrival. Check the bedding, meals and other services in the booking details, rather than relying on a photograph from another train. Clarify any special requirements in advance: a lower bunk, accessibility for boarding, or travelling with a child.
