A diagram is more reliable when buying a ticket than a picture found separately on the internet. It shows exactly the carriage you are choosing. Check not only the shelf number, but also the compartment number and its proximity to service areas.
Read the diagram as you would a floor plan
Look for the symbols for lower and upper berths, entrances and toilet facilities. If the key is unclear, don’t make assumptions based solely on whether the number is even or odd: check the carriage type. If travelling with others, check the boundaries of a single compartment. Seats from different compartments may appear next to each other in the numbered list, so the diagram is more important than a brief list.
Choose according to the passenger’s needs
If you have difficulty climbing, an upper berth will not be suitable simply because it is cheaper or currently available. Agree on your choice before payment. Consider a location near service areas as a compromise, rather than a guarantee of absolute quiet. Once you’ve booked, check the carriage and seat number on your ticket: in a rush, it’s easy to confirm the wrong option.
