For an overnight journey, it’s more convenient to have a small separate bag than to have to take everything out of your main luggage. Pack it according to your routine: boarding, eating, sleeping and getting ready in the morning. That way, fewer items will get lost among the shelves.
Essentials to hand
Put your documents, ticket, water, tissues, toiletries, a cable and your usual sleeping essentials in it. Choose snacks that are easy to eat without any fiddly preparation or storage. Don’t take too many open packets. Keep any personal medication you need in its original packaging and use it as prescribed.
Prepare for your morning journey
Lay out the clothes and shoes you’ll need for your journey before you go to bed. Set your alarm with plenty of time to get ready, and check the name of your station and arrival time. Don’t plan on having to repack your bags during a short stop. Before leaving, check the shelf, table, socket and luggage area: it’s easy to forget your charging cable when you’re in a rush.
