In brief: as of 8 October 2026, ETIAS is not yet accepting applications. The official EU website says the system is planned to start in the last quarter of 2026, with the exact date to be announced in advance. Therefore, do not buy ETIAS authorisation on third-party websites, and check the status again immediately before travelling.

What ETIAS is
ETIAS is a future electronic authorisation for nationals of countries whose citizens do not need a short-stay visa to enter specified European countries. It is linked to a travel document and is not a bus ticket, a visa or a guarantee of admission at the border. The competent authorities will continue to decide whether a person may cross the border.
The requirement does not concern all bus passengers, but people who meet the ETIAS criteria. Eligibility may depend on nationality, travel document, the type and duration of the stay, and the possession of a residence permit or another status. Do not determine your category solely by the bus's country of departure.
What the current status is
On the date of verification, the official EU website states that launch is planned for the fourth quarter of 2026 and that travellers currently need take no action. The exact starting day still needs to be checked: the launch schedule may be updated. If your trip is planned for the end of the year or later, revisit the official page before buying a ticket and before departure.
Until the system starts, do not enter passport or card details on websites impersonating the official ETIAS service and already promising instant authorisation. At launch, the EU is expected to publish the exact date and links to the official website and app. Verify the address yourself rather than following an advertising message or a link from an unknown agent.
What to consider specifically for bus travel
ETIAS is not tied to air travel: if the requirement applies to a traveller, travelling by bus, car or another mode does not in itself remove it. The operator checks documents under its own boarding procedure, but does not replace the border authorities or guarantee entry.
- Check your nationality and document type against the official ETIAS list.
- Check whether the launch date, conditions or transitional rules have changed.
- If ETIAS will be in operation on your travel date, apply only through the official channel and well in advance.
- After approval, check that the authorisation details match the passport you will use for travel.
- Keep your valid passport and documents supporting the purpose of your journey, if required in your circumstances.
Do not confuse ETIAS with EES. ETIAS is advance authorisation for certain visa-exempt travellers once the system launches; EES already records certain external border crossings and the biometric data of the passengers concerned. These are different mechanisms, and the requirements depend on the individual.
