The cheapest price in a search doesn’t always mean the best value for money. Add in your baggage requirements, seat preferences, city transport and the terms for changing your plans. Once you’ve done that, it’s much easier to compare offers.

Change one parameter at a time

Compare the nearest departure time, an acceptable date or a slower journey between your chosen stations. Don’t change everything at once: otherwise, you’ll easily lose sight of your original goal. If another station is cheaper, factor in the cost of getting there. Only specify discount cards if you’re eligible to use them, and read the promotional details alongside any restrictions.

    Assess the cost of inflexibility

A cheap fare may be inconvenient if it involves an international connection with an uncertain waiting time. Compare the potential losses from changing your plans with the additional cost of other options. For multiple journeys, add up the cost of individual tickets and only then check the pass. Don’t buy an unnecessary section just for the sake of an advertised saving.
