You have received a new passport, but the visa sticker you need remains in the previous booklet. Two documents lie on the table, while the bus order has space for only one number or no passport field at all. Do not try to “make one passport” yourself: first check whether the combination is acceptable, then how to use it during the journey.
This is not just about updating the ticket. The new document establishes certain matters, while the visa is physically in another. Official NetherlandsWorldwide guidance for travel to the Netherlands describes presenting the new passport with the previous one containing a legible, undamaged visa. This is a useful verified example, but not a universal promise for every sticker, change of details or country on your overland route.

Establish exactly which two booklets you have
Distinguish the passport you intend to use as your valid travel document from the booklet containing the visa. Check the precise circumstances of each: expiry, replacement, damage or another issue. Do not call every previous document “expired” if the reason is different. That may matter for a targeted explanation from the authority that issued the visa or passport.
Note where the sticker is, its validity, type, territorial coverage and permitted number of entries. An old passport does not make a visa indefinite, and a new one does not create extra permitted days. If you have already travelled on this visa, do not assess only the page’s appearance. Check its use history and other required conditions separately.
Do not confuse this situation with dual nationality or two simultaneously valid passports, one of which you simply left at home. The sequence matters in your request: the document was replaced, the visa remained in the previous one and travel is planned for these dates. The more accurately you describe the set, the less likely you are to receive a general answer about an entirely different passenger category.
Inspect the visa page without repairing it
Check that the sticker is legible and whether a hole, cut, water or other damage has affected it. Do not turn this into your own expert conclusion on validity. If in doubt, contact the competent authority and identify the concern before departure. A photograph can help explain the problem through a permitted official channel, but will not turn a damaged page into a proper original.
Do not detach the page, move the visa into the new passport or laminate it for convenience. Do not conceal a defect or marking on the booklet either. If an official explained a special procedure, retain the exact explanation rather than replacing it with chat advice. The bus driver should not be deciding how to physically restore a foreign document.
Store the documents in a way that does not alter them: separate compartments or a protective folder that does not cover necessary pages. Do not staple the booklets together or glue them to each other following a random instruction. If an official authority specifies a requirement for presenting the set, clarify an acceptable practical way to meet it in your particular case.
Check personal details separately
Compare the name, date of birth and other identifying details needed for clarification. A new passport number will understandably differ from the previous one, but a different spelling of the name or changed citizenship must not be hidden behind “It is all the same person.” State exactly what changed. There is no editorial rule establishing an acceptable number of different letters for every visa.
Ask the authority competent for the visa whether the existing sticker can be used with this new document and which originals are needed on your dates. If it requests additional confirmation, clarify its exact name and form. Do not buy translations and certifications at random simply because a neighbour travelled with a similar folder.
If your surname changed, do not present that as a technical change of number. The visa, document validity and bus purchase may require separate actions. An old certificate or photo of the new page does not give this article grounds to guarantee acceptance of the complete set. Resolve a complex discrepancy before boarding, not with a hurried explanation in the aisle.
Check the entire bus route
Ask the carrier to name the countries on the specific service’s route and planned connections. An answer about the destination country does not automatically cover all overland transit. Do not rely solely on a car route from a navigation app. If the return bus takes a different route, prepare two outlines instead of simply reversing the first.
Compare those countries with the official explanation for your documents. The German visa FAQ discussing a new passport and a valid visa in the old one specifically advises checking travel to other Schengen countries with their relevant missions. Do not turn an example from one country into certification for the entire bus journey. Give the authority the actual geography when its answer depends on it.
If another country or a new external crossing is added during preparation, return to the checks. An answer obtained for the previous route may not explain the new arrangement. Do not ask the crew to change the route privately for your documents. Compare other confirmed offers if necessary, but first clarify your own basis for travelling.
Confirm the order without editing the PDF
Through the seller’s official contact, ask which passport details the purchase actually stores and what the carrier checks at boarding. Not all systems have the same fields. Where a number is required, ask exactly how it should be entered or updated for a two-document set. Do not add it yourself over the issued ticket.
Briefly explain the situation without sharing a complete public archive: “I have a new passport and a visa in the previous booklet; I am clarifying the documentary issue separately. Please tell me which details are needed for this service.” Confirmation of a purchase amendment does not mean the seller has made a decision on the visa. Keep different parties’ responses so the limits of each remain clear.
If official clarification is unfinished, check purchase conditions before further expenditure. Do not buy a second seat as a way to “attach another passport”. A new ticket does not remove documentary uncertainty. Equally, do not cancel a valid order at random: first establish the process available from the particular seller and its consequences.
Prepare the set for every check
Keep both required originals accessible but under your control, not in different suitcases in the luggage compartment. If you hand over a document for checking, remember which one. Once they are returned, check that the booklets are yours and that you have the correct number before leaving the control area. Do not take someone else’s similar passport because the group is rushing.
Explain to a companion beforehand that the folder contains two documents belonging to one person, but do not ask them to decide independently which to show on your behalf. A brief note of the confirmed procedure will help avoid searching old correspondence at the border. However, do not interpret an authority’s letter more broadly than its wording: it does not override other entry requirements.
Do not leave the old booklet behind after the first check assuming it is no longer needed. Assess the set for subsequent checks and the return journey against the actual route. If an original is lost or its condition changes, that is a new circumstance requiring competent clarification, not a reason to use an edited image.
Questions and answers
Can I take only the new passport and a photo of the old visa?
Do not treat a photograph as a universal replacement for an original. The official Dutch example describes a set comprising the new passport and the previous one with a legible, undamaged visa. Check your route’s requirements.
Does a new booklet automatically give a new number of entries on the old visa?
No. Do not assume that. Visa conditions and use history are checked separately from the issue of a new passport.
Can I move the sticker onto a new page myself?
Do not interfere with the document. Questions about using or properly replacing it must be addressed with the competent authority, not by physically moving the sticker.
If my name’s spelling changed, is telling the driver enough?
Do not rely on that explanation to resolve the visa issue. Tell the authority the exact discrepancy and separately confirm purchase details with the seller.
Must both numbers be entered on the bus ticket?
Ask about the actual fields and procedure of the particular carrier. Do not add details to the PDF yourself or assume every system handles the set in the same way.
